Wa S'up Galileo?

Well, this is amusing. Heh.

What? You say you've never heard this song before? I'm going to assume that you haven't been to a middle school pep rally this decade. My condolences.

Well, here you go.

Oh man, these lyrics are so bad. But if you're 13, I think these lyrics really speak to your soul. But even if the sentiment of the song isn't awakening your inner teenager, maybe you can still get into this beat. Happy Summer.

An Apology and A Gift Card

A confiscated note!

Dear [girl],
I am sorry that I wasn't there for you when I was your boyfriend. I hope your having fun with your new boy friend. He must be really nice. Here is a $15 best buy gift card you can use it to buy you a phone. The one right across the street from Northgate sells them for $9.09.
Hope your happy. Sorry for my mistakes.
Your friend, or non-friend
[boy]

I received some ardent apologies from a past relationship of my own this week. But no gift cards, so you have to wonder how heartfelt it really was. Just saying.

Is there anything more demoralizing for a 36 year old woman than when her love life echos the 8th graders...

Sigh.

The answer is yes.

This is more demoralizing: I have an deep, deep affection for Carley Rae Jensen's song "Call Me Maybe". Fact.

Earlier this week I was driving to work and my CD was skipping around (I ruin CDs; NEVER loan me one of yours) so I switched to radio power and had to pump it UP because Carley Rae's sweet, sweet vocals were on the airways.

The first time I endured this song I rolled my eyes a little more than I'm willing to admit now that I'm a mega fan. But soon after hearing it, America's darlings on the U.S. Olympic swim team made a video, I fell in love with it, and it all went downhill from there. Now I'm hooked. I love it so bad. I love it so, so bad.

Is there a more adorable girl on this planet than Missy Franklin [minute 1:36]? There really isn't.

Also this:

And finally this:

You're* welcome.

I promise I'm not an 8th grader contrary to all offered evidence.

*evidence that supports my claim of not being an 8th grader: I know the correct usage of your/you're.

Where are the Donuts?

Yesterday morning I left Seattle with the commuters, but not to go to work (yippee!). I came to visit my sisters and their 9 (almost 10) kids. I showed up and was greeted with enthusiasm.

"Aunt Karen's here!"

"She is?!"

"Yay!"

"Where are the donuts?"

Uh?

So I looked into their shining expectant faces and said, "Oh, I stopped here first so I could find out which ones you wanted".

Correct answer.

"YAAAAAYYY!"

Escalator Escapade

I went to Target last night to get some pens so I could grade Algebra tests. Which are, by the way, sitting here next to me still not graded. First I checked out the chocolate and cold cereal isles. And let me assure you that if health and good nutrition could be maintained consisting on a diet solely of these two favorite food groups I would never eat another piece of lettuce in my life.

Eventually I realized that I needed to get down to business and find some pens so I hopped on the escalator heading downstairs. As I'm riding it down I see the pen isle above me on the floor I was just on so I turn around and try to run back up the escalator. And, wow, that was hard. This escalator was moving like it meant business and I was sprinting in place. At some point it occurred to me that if I didn't make it to the top I was going to look foolish (more than I already did) so I gave it everything I had and overcame that speedy staircase of DOOM.

There's this weird sensation that happens to your legs when you're running backwards up an escalator and you finally get to the top that manifests itself as a very pronounced stumble.

I caught myself, balanced my traitorous legs, turned to the watching couple and declared victory. They politely acknowledged the crazy person that was clogging the escalator and I bought some pens.

do u want 2 d8 me?

So, school started 1.5 weeks ago. I miss sleeping in until 11. I miss riding my bike around in the sunshine. I miss the money I'm now spending on gas for my killer commute. But I like my classes, the kids are pretty awesome, The Black Keys are rocking out inside my car stereo, and the notes have started flooding in. So my world's going to be ok.

This note, which we will be featuring today, was discovered after the kids were gone for the day, just laying on the floor by the garbage can/rubbish bin (for my Aussie and Kiwi readers).

Get comfortable.
It's awesome.
As always, NO changes to spelling or punctuation except to maintain privacy or decency.

Dear, [Girl's name]

Hey I wanted to see if you can give me a chance cuz we couldn't date last year we had no time and [dang] you look so fine today everybodies saying we would be a cute couple so I wanted to see if u wanted to test the waters with me i'm not even playing around I like you I've changed since last year I'm not a player like I used to be if I really like someone I won't date them just to get something I've changed I'll never go back to the same person I was. Just let me show you I can prove to you that I can be a good boyfriend I now I'm your best friend but I wan't to be more than just your friend. I can be a good boyfriend trust me. Just let me know if you want to date.

P.S I hope we can finish wat we started.

unsigned

Ok kids, what we have here is a mystery. Why was this precious declaration of amorous devotion lying on the floor next to the garbage can?

Did [Girl's name] receive the note and this is her response? Maybe they aren't best friends after all? Or she was appalled, understandably, by his grasp of punctuation usage in the English language? I mean seriously, who wants a boyfriend that puts the comma after dear, instead of your name, therefore negating it being used as an adjective to describe how they feel about you?! Honestly guys, get a clue!

Did the note sender chicken out, never send it to [Girl's name], and throw it away in disgust?

Was a jealous third party entrusted with the sacred task of delivering the note to [Girl's name] and, overcome with the green-eyed monster, thwarted true love's course?

And the greatest mystery of all: why after 108 words did he suddenly decide to throw in a period?

Rogue Babies

The floor of the chapel was crawling with babies during church today. They're like wind up toys going every which way and direction.

You see these kids squirming in their parents arms to get free. You know it's because they feel the need for speed and the cheerios and fishy snacks, which will pacify them for a time, will never fill the void.

Eventually sweet freedom is gathered in. Their knees hit the carpet with squeals of delight and if their old man can't catch them, they're off like a shot.

Each of them however, has one destination: the steps at the front. They crawl there as fast as they can, or run if they've mastered the art of bipedal mobility. Only to reach the steps and turn around to glowingly taunt both their parents and every restrained baby in the room.

Soon a shamefaced, sleep deprived adult comes shuffling down the aisle to collect their genetic offspring who looks on the congregation with triumph in their eyes, fists in the air and a cry of "I shall return," upon their lips.

Confiscated Notes

Seventh graders love writing notes to each other. I have an absolutely-NO-note-writing policy in my classroom. Seriously kids, we have important things to do!

Ahhhh, but when I find a note, I love it. LOVE IT. They are theee greatest to read. Today's crop was too awesome to not share. I might make this a regular feature on my blog. All names have been changed and swears have been changed to more polite words, otherwise it's exactly as it appears in it's original glory.

Low Calorie Friday Treat

So here's how this started:
A few years ago, I brought cookies for my students on a Friday. Not just because it was Friday, there was a valid educational reason. Something do do with testing variables.
Controlled Variable: Oreo type sandwich cookie top and bottom
Manipulated Variable: Creme filling in chocolate, vanilla and mint
Responding Variable: Number of students who chose each cookie type
But the facade was transparent and easy to push aside. I knew it. They knew it. It was Friday and I thought a treat was in order.
So a few weeks later, on a treat-less Friday, the students begged for a Friday treat. I said, um, ok. But that I didn't have any high calorie treats so it would have to be a low calorie treat. Then I dug around on my hard drive and found this sound clip.

They loved it, so the tradition began.
  • movie clips
  • audio clips
  • funny cartoons
  • weird stories
  • once we figured out our secret code names with the Name Change-o-Chart 2000
But the tradition has morphed and now I try to find something "educational". Here's one from a couple of weeks ago when we were studying energy transfers:

But this week we are talking about the nature of light. Does it move as particles or waves?? I couldn't find anything to give them. So after we cleaned up after the lab. SUPER MESSY today; we had to get the mop out and everything. I played some Queen for them and we practiced our air guitar.

It's become a fun tradition for me and the scholars entrusted into my care. I even sometimes have former students stopping by my classroom on Fridays to get treats. But I need some multimedia resources. If you, or anyone you can think of has any thoughts, ideas or favorite clips, please let me know.

I'm excited to hear your suggestions--don't disappoint the kids!

Love, Loopy Wafflesniffer

Star-Crossed Journey to the Promised Land

There are some things I refuse to be totally honest about. With that disclaimer, you can know that some of what you're about to read is complete rubbish. But I will start with a true premise and embellish it in whatever way seems appropriate.
The locking system on Honda cars is diabolical. In order to secure the premises, you must lift the handle to the diver's door as you are shutting it or it doesn't actually lock. This is a detail I knew and understood on Saturday morning when I drove myself to the airport in a friend's Honda. The plan? I drive myself. Put the car in long term parking. She'll pick it up when she gets back to town on Tuesday. It's a great plan because, although I was staying in San Antonio, I was flying out of Austin.

But, due to a series of star-crossed events, my wallet (with my photographic identification) was no where to be found on Saturday morning. My hope was to arrive to the airport with plenty of time to spare. My hopes, however, were fated to be dashed.

I unpacked and repacked my suitcase 3 times. Looked under couches, chairs, beds, tables, laundry baskets and even the fridge. Where is it?! No clue.

So, I got to the airport a little later than anticipated. As I’m driving up to the parking lot, the concern that’s rolling through my brain is what if I can’t get through the security gate with my Pacific Science Center ID? What will I do if the car is locked and I can’t get back in? So let me pause here and tell you the correct answer: take the car key with you. Obviously my friend has a spare key, because the plan was always that I should just leave the key under the mat, lock up the car (see directions above) and she’ll get it later. While I fully acknowledge the brilliance of that plan now, it did not cross my mind at the time. My plan was to leave one of the back doors unlocked. What’s the chance that anyone would notice and steal the car? In my defense it was early, no one I knew in any time zone was awake to tell me what a dumb plan I had conjured out of the depths of my brain. So I went with it.

I remembered to lift the handle as I shutting the driver’s door. I walked around to the back seat passenger side door I had planned to leave unlocked. Reached for the handle. Nothing. Here’s the theatrical rendition.

Car: I am locked.

Me: Locked?!

Car: Yes.

Me: No!!!!

One detail I didn’t know about the Honda car door locking system, is that lifting the handle locks all the doors. Even the one you just reached over and lifted the button to leave unlocked. Even the one specifically selected because that’s the side of the backseat where your suitcase is sitting. So there I was, standing in the parking lot of the Austin, Texas airport, with no suitcase, no wallet and no time.

I realized that my only choice now was to walk away and hope the security guard thinks my smile is charming enough to let me through with my expired voter’s card (no picture) and my WWU student ID (fuzzy picture from 5 years ago).

Luckily charm is something I have in abundance, so a few agonizing minutes later I was seated in seat 16B on my way back to the Promised Land.

What’s the best part of the story—when I got to Seattle I didn’t have to stand at the baggage claim and wait forever for my suitcase to come rolling around the carousel.

Two Truths and a Lie.

I often nap on public transportation. On the way to work one morning I was horrified to wake up with my head resting on the shoulder on some stranger! Wait for it, it gets much worse...I was drooling on his suit!
Status:
True!
When I first started riding the bus to work, I was nervous about weirdos. It was at this moment I faced the truth—I am the weirdo on the bus!

I got a shout out from the Bat Commander at the Aquabats concert I went to in Seattle. He told me he liked my vest (unquestionably mocking me) and then blew me a kiss (to make up). I forgave him.
Status: True!
I was running late after school and didn’t have time to go home and change into a more appropriate for a rock concert outfit. So, I wore a fleece vest. Very tacky. I thought I might get cold later… No, I actually have no excuse. But he really did blow me a kiss. This story can be corroborated by my friend Jeremy.

On the 1st day of the sailing class I took at WWU, I had to capsize the boat out on the lake, so the sail was all the way under (90 degrees to the surface) then try to get the boat back up and crawl back in! I got very wet and but had so much fun!
Status: False!

This story was almost true. I signed up for sailing lessons. Hard to do unless you have a copiousness number of credits so you are one of the first to register, as this class fills promptly. I got out to the lake and saw the class before me out on the lake doing the exercise described and fear flooded my heart. After confirming that that was not the advanced sailing class, as I first hoped, I decided not to proceed. Some scary things in life I’ve regretted not doing. I often wish I was braver. But crazy isn’t something I want to be. This was beyond scary and into the crazy category!

No Scientific Facts Were Harmed in the Making of this Film

**Warning, Spoilers Ahead** Don't you hate it when you go to a movie and you just can't enjoy the action because they have all their science facts wrong?! Me too. It's the worst. A couple of months ago Dave and I went to see Batman (I guess it was a while ago, when did that come out?) And I think he was annoyed with me because I kept whispering over to him "That would never happen!" Ok, so let's make sure that everyone understands me here. I'm not complaining about the Hollywood special effects, or the whole idea of a "Bat-Man", but rather, my beef is with the machine that vaporizes all liquid in the city causing the dissolved poisons in the water pipes to become a layer of poisonous gasses inhaled by the greater Gotham area. Also, I take exception with the total lack of respect for the laws of water pressure, so blatantly disregarded when the villains were dumping the poison into the pipes. Sigh.

Really, if all the water in Gotham is vaporized, what's the point of the poison? Every cell in your body would burst!

Maybe you feel sorry for me? Maybe you feel sorry for Dave? But here's who you should feel sorry for: America's youth. My students are confused about the Richter's Scale because of movies like 10.5. Folks, only a fault that reaches around the entire globe would generate that kind of earthquake. Maybe you missed this movie? (Luckily I can tell you the ending).

The good news is that the heroes of 10.5 were able to weld the Earth's crust back together with nuclear bombs...

The bad news is twofold: the science consultants on the script were probably paid for their contributions and the earth is now mostly radioactive.

Even after this tantrum I have to confess that I actually do enjoy science fiction movies. Most of the fun for me is groaning and complaining. Nothing quite fills that need like The Core. I get angry all over just thinking about that movie. URRGGH! We seem to have a fascination for fixing natural disasters with our nuclear arsenal. I'm seriously in doubt of their effectiveness. Thanks for listening. Thanks for caring. As a parting gift to you for reading this rant session, I leave you this list of movies to love and movies to avoid:

To love:
The Dish
Contact
2001: A Space Odyssey
Planet Earth

To avoid:
Any movie that leaves you with a sinking feeling in your gut as you suspect that living on Earth is not at all safe. And ends with a nuclear explosion to save the day.

Hey Kids! Thinking About Stocking Up On Your Space Exploration Supplies?

My college roomie Aims and I went on a Seattle adventure last week. Here's a slideshow of a quirky little place she's been wanting to take me for a while. Of course being a big nerd, I was predisposed to fall in love with it. Which I promptly did. I still chuckle and marvel at the cleverness. One sign on their door claims “We outfit the following: adventurers, commuters, rocket scientists (professional and freelance), tourists, theoretical mathematicians of immodest idiom, specialists of all stripes, small crews, large parties et cetera.” Aims isn't nerdy, well she isn't nerdy in the same way, but as you can see, we both had a good time. The proceeds all go to benefit a non-profit student writing center located in the back. The teleporter is a secret entrance. I walked (more like twirled) in on a bunch of students. I was surprised. I teleported right back.

Canis Major

Ok, Bella's "it". She got tagged. A couple of things about the dog:

1. Bella is a great Dane. Emphasis on great . . .

"That's not a dog, that's a horse!" ~Alexa
"Make that drooling stop!"~Callie

2. So, most creatures move away from the fire when they start to feel the affects of melting skin, dehydration, pain, and so forth. Not this girly. No, she lays there and moans. Moans and moans and moans. Until someone has pity on her and shoves her out of the way or turns the fire off or dumps water on her or something.

3. Bella erroneously believes herself to be a small dog. She gets nervous around the "big" dogs at the park. Never mind that they are smaller than her. She wants nothing more than to be able to sit in your lap. She dearly loves to cuddle. Which, given her size, feels more like she's squishing the living daylights out of you. But if you're strong enough to take it, it's very sweet.

4. Ok, this next one is gross so skip it if you are weak-stomached. Bella loves to eat kitty litter---I hang my head in shame for her as she has no proper shame for herself. I do not know why she does this. I cannot understand it. The cats are equally puzzled. And let me tell you, a lot of time and resources have been devoted to try to nip this taste for "alternative protein" in the bud.

5. Bella is smart. But as smart as she is (and folks, she has a big vocab and she really is a smartie-pants, sans the pants) but the finer points of "playing catch" totally elude her. And really, that's not even fair because she understands the catching part but not the part where the human safely retrieves the thrown object and resends it into the atmosphere for continued fun. Bella's idea of fun can be summed up in this conversation I believe is going on in her head . . .
"Bet you can't get this out of my mouth. Look how big my teeth are. And my jaw is too strong for your puny muscles. HA! this toy is mine forever! Wait! where are you going--you're supposed to pry this out of my teeth. Come on! Try it. I dare you weakling. . ."
On closer investigation, maybe I'm the one who doesn't understand the finer points of the game "Toy war".

"We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults. Heaven has accorded this to us in the uncritical canine attachment."
~George Eliot

The Breakfast of Champions: Taking breakfast and Tetris to a whole new level. (pun intended)

One quarter at WWU I took Organic Chem., Physics and Tetris. It was a fantastically full load. I even flirted with the idea of dropping Tetris but instead I worked hard and stuck it out. It was a huge time commitment, as I studied two or three hours a day for that class alone. At night I would close my eyes and see blocks falling in my brain. It’s possible I passed my other classes but one thing I know—
I am addicted to Tetris. A-d-d-i-c-t-e-d-!
My favorite version is Cowtris; which you must download immediately. I promise you will love it.

Get it here: http://nonsense.wglick.org/cowtris.html

Of course waffles are also deliciously wonderful so I chuckled when my friend Aims sent me this picture:

Waffles. Yum. Calories aside, they are delicious with whipped cream and maple syrup and they taste best on the couch in front of the fire watching reruns of whatever show you never have time to watch because you are always trying to sharpen and hone your Tetris skills.

My roomie got me hooked on from-scratch buttermilk batter--no dry mixes here! I especially love to toss in mini choco chips and dried cherries, fresh blueberries or bacon. Maybe not all together, but maybe. If that's your thing. My thing is to enjoy separately. But hey it's your breakfast so go wild.

What's your waffle thing?

An irrational love of pie.

I love pie. And I know I’m not the only one. Jealousy is the most common response I get when I explain our family’s tradition of waking up to a pumpkin pie breakfast on Thanksgiving morning. Yum. Pumpkin Pie. Lemon Meringue Pie. Raspberry Pie. Apple Pie. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Chocolate Pie. I really love all pie…sans mince meat; sorry Dad. I just don’t understand what exactly it’s made of—it makes me nervous.

Fact: Every 5 minutes one in four people is currently eating, preparing to eat or thinking of eating pie.

Fact: 9 out of 10 people would rather eat pie than brush their teeth.

Fact: Astronauts and Cosmonauts won’t go to space without pie http://www.cnn.com/US/9511/atlantis/11-16/index.html

So you can imagine my joy today (3.14) when my love of pie intersects with my love of pi. The irrational, never repeating, wonder-number that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. My love of pi started in 10th grade Geometry when Mr. Crack offered me extra credit if I could memorize pi to its 25th decimal place. A few days later he gave me a chunk of chalk and stood back surprised as I quickly jotted down pi to the 49th decimal.

49?! you ask? Yep, 49. And it was easy, here’s how:

Fact: telephone numbers are in groups of 7 (except for in the Cook Islands where 5 digits will let you reach anyone in the country).

Fact: I had seven friends in high school. (Who knew I was so popular!)

Fact: I simply assigned a set of 7 numbers to each friend

I'm going to the moon and I'm taking my flannel pajama bottoms.

Lately there have been a lot of discipline issues at school. Marijuana on the bus. Language sailors would blush to hear. "STUDENTS!, talk like your grandma is sitting next to you.” I call it pre-WASL spring stress. The principal calls it lack of goals.

So on Friday she passed out goal setting surveys for each kid to fill out. Questions like “What college do you want to go to?”, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, etc. One of the questions was “If you could have twenty things, what would they be?”

Understandably, some of my students had a hard time after about five things they wanted, most of us don’t have a running total we have easy access to that quickly. To be helpful, I wrote some incredibly random things on the board to inspire them to think beyond the obvious nano i pod, clothes from Hollister, a million dollars, yada, yada, yada.

My Suggestions:

  • planetarium in my house,
  • a puppy,
  • national parks pass,
  • surfing lessons,
  • a cupcake,
  • vacation to New Zealand,
  • a telescope,
  • fraction skills,
  • waffle iron,
  • a very minor role in a very major film,
  • more rocks for my rock collection,
  • for Pluto to have its planet rights reinstated, (we miss you Pluto!)

But here’s my quandary; if you read the question carefully, is it saying you would get these additional twenty things along with all of the other things you currently have? Or do you only get twenty items to own? Are you getting sent off to the moon and may take only twenty items? Curious. I'm going to the moon and I'm taking my flannel pajama bottoms. What would you take?
